OK, so I desided to ask here as most other places I've eitehr already asked or wouldn't expect an intellagent answer. I already have my passport, and I plan to go to another country (Australlia). What I am looking for is a deffinite answer to a simple question. How does one come about a Visa?
For anyone who doens't know, a passport is what you need to leave a country, a visa is what you need to enter and stay in another one. I have my passport, but have been told several stories on how to acquire a visa. I've been told by one source that you automatically get a visa upon arriving in a country or when you buy a ticket. I've also been told I have to apply for one, before I go to said country. So this is where I need help. I cant' just apply for one, because once it's approved that starts my duration of when I'm allowed to stay and that only lasts three months with some itneresting fees. I assume this means I get one upon entering a country but am not sure.
So, as I'm expecting this forum to have some bright people on it. I'm hoping someone here knows the answer. Do you get a visa when you enter a country/buy a ticket or do you have to apply for one before you go?

Many countries with which the US has agreements allow you to come for a vacation without applying for a visa. The maximum length of stay varies per country, but if it's for a week or less, you shouldn't have any trouble in a nation like Australia. When I went to Ireland and the UK, there was no need to apply for a visa. We just answered some questions at customs and they stamped our passports.
If you're planning to work or attend school there, you will need a work or student visa.
If you're planning a long vacation, you may need an extended stay visa.
Best of luck, Matt

Well, I've looked up the visas, and know how to apply for them. I'm not sure though if for the amount of time I wish to stay I can go wihtout a visa or not then, or how it'd work. I plan on staying for 3 months (souly because thats how long a visitor's visa lasts).
I want to stay for as long as I legally can, but have found no help in the field of figureing out what to do. It was only recently I learned from Leon Grex (I beleive) that I had to go to the post office for a passport.
How would I go about finding out how long I can go to Australia without a visa? Thank you, you helped me understand how people have gone to countries for short amounts of time without needing to apply for a visa before going (as alot of people I've talked to have no idea what I'm talking about). Any suggestions for where I can go to ask someone for help on the subject? I've found little good ifnormation on the internet.

I don't know how much help this will be but go ahead and go to wikipedia and type in "Immigration to Australia". You've probably already done that but its the best thing I can think of... sry

Actually I have. I'm waiting on a response from some agency of the Australlian government on my questions about the Visa, how it's applied, and so forth.
though thank you for the advice. I always am in need of seeking help.

Australia requires either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, for stays up to 90 days) This site has all the information you should need http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_t ... s_954.html[/url] Noah

Thank You,
I've learned now that, once I acquire a visa, It is in automatic effect. Meaning that I have a year to get to Australlia before I must apply again. Now I know exactly what I"ll be up to.
