Hey guys, Enjoyed the tournament. Colin and I talked a bit afterwards. We're thinking maybe of holding another tourney. I'm thinking it might be fun to do more regularly. Maybe it would grow.
Thanks, Matt

That would be cool. All of us were saying that we should see if we could do it more. I really think it would grow once it became more normal in other peoples' eyes. After all, who doesn't think hitting others with foams swords would be fun.

Yeah, I think theres a lot of people who would come if they had more time to plan. I think the main reason I didn't get more for the project was because I procrastinated and didn't put my fliers out till a few days before hand. If we gave people some time to make plans for rides and things then they would probably show up.

Also, I was thinking it would be a neat event if people could show up and learn how to make their own weapons (I could provide some materials), then compete. Everyone could keep the weapons they made. That way, even if they didn't win, they'd get something out of it. Maybe they'd return with their weapon to the next event.
I dunno, something to think about.

I do think that would be a good idea, giving people an incentive to join. But then there would be the problem of it costing you too much, so maybe we could do something somewhat like an after-school club and charge an admission fee and instead of dipping into your wallet we can use that money for the materials. Also making into an after-school club would make it easier for us to get the principle's permission. We could also make it on a schedule, like once a month, so that people could always know in advanced.

Good thoughts. I wouldn't mind too much paying for the materials, if it'll encourage people to play, especially after the LARP gets under way and this'll be a good recruitment tool for new players. But maybe charge a small fee for them to make a weapon that would help cover the cost of materials. That way, people could participate in the tourney with a borrowed weapon or they can pay a small fee to make their own and keep it.
Also, as far as prizes, I think it would be too expensive to award $25 each time (unless we collect entry fees and make enough to cover that cost), but I would be willing to present awards that would help players out once the LARP gets started, such as items, weapons, or small costume pieces (ear tips, jewelry, etc). Alternatively, the prizes could be things like Goblins Stamps (points that can be turned in for in-game items or experience) or a reduction in fees, such as the annual membership (which will be something like $20) or event fees. These types of things cost less than they'd be worth to a player (Goblin Stamps, for example are free!), and might encourage people to come to events, which, if you hadn't noticed, is my eventual goal with promoting events like this.
Great ideas, keep 'em coming.
-Matt
Edited to add: Of course, if you think prize money might be the only way to get people to participate, I might be able to swing something, perhaps $20/event.

I think the best idea for getting prize money if we do would be to collect entrance fees. I like the idea of the winner getting things like Goblin stamps or in game items as well.
Maybe we could have the office announce the day of the month we're going to do it? That way the people who don't stop in the hallway to read fliers will know what we're doing.

That would be a good idea, maybe just having it on the announcements would even be enough. I also like the idea of giving the winner in game items but that might alone not be enough so what we might be able to do is give them the item and give them a small money prize, like 10 dollars, so that way they everyone is happy.
The only thing that stinks is that even if we do help get this thing started we won't be able to see it take off since we are all seniors and leaving this year. But maybe if you keep it going during the summer we could do it when we come back from college every summer break.

The problem with announcements is that no one in the Vo-tech hears them in the morning. A mixture of fliers and using the evening announcements as reminders would probably work well and not be too hard to get done .
For prizes, I think boffer weapons or other game-related stuff that aren't useless in the real-world would be the best. Not everyone will necessarily want to LARP at first so giving them prizes they have no use for would keep them away from the boffer tournaments. So if we want to bring people into LARP with boffer, (using the added enticement of prizes) giving away items exclusively useful to LARP seems self-defeating. (in my head at least)
Note: I hope that made sense
Faithfuls right, it does suck that we'll have to leave but hey most people that seem to do this do it in college anyway. We can leave our own little weird mark on Elkins, right guys. We just have to get some of the younger generation involved to keep this going. (wow I feel old now) Well ironically I have a 13-year-old gabbing over my shoulder about what he'd do in LARP right now.

Maybe both evening and morning announcements with the addition of a few fliers would do the job. And for the prizes I still think a small mixture of both would do best and I don't really think that if we do give both that it will scare people away from LARP.
And on the side note, I'm going to make a short sword and a long sword. Did anyone happen to remember the max length on them and how much padding should be on either side?

Well I think we all agree that any free advertising that it is possible for us to do at the high school we should do.
When I talked about prizes I meant at first. It would be fine to do stuff like goblin stamps after they start playing but before it would just be like wtf are these for.

I see your point. For now though, are we just going to let Mr.Taylor do all of the hard stuff like getting the permission, setting dates, and the advertising or are we going to try and still help and maybe say that this the result of LeonGrex's senior project, which should enhance how the project looks. I don't mind still helping its just that I like being told what to do...
Oh and, LeonGrex, you might want to keep that rule list that your mom was nice enough to print off for us so people can always know the rules.
Sorry about sounding selfish here its just that I ran out of things to say and I did kinda want to know but its really not all that important because we will, of coarse, be involved in some way. Just, how much?

Well I assume Mr. Taylor will be the driving force in it but I bet he'd take any help were willing to give (and tell us were he needs help). It isn't too hard to set up the tournaments after school anyway. Kris just asked the principal and the only stipulation was that a teacher was present and we moved the tables back once we were done. I assume it will be even easier with a teacher himself asking (if not we just say Kris is continuing on even after his project). We just have to make sure theirs no Gear-Up on the dates we set and I think the tournament part will be fine. This is probably all more for Mr. Taylor to answer but hey I was kinda bored.
P.S. Thats a great idea for Kris's senior project btw

These are all great ideas. We also have the theater for our use whenever the cafeteria is being used, and when the weather gets better, the courtyard will be awesome. This is a continuation of Kris's project. I would not have thought to organize boffer tourneys at the school.
It'll be neat for you guys to have started something great that can outlast your time at high school.
